Lina spends her days in the Appalachian mountains taking care of her family, dreaming of marrying her childhood sweetheart. She escapes her hard reality only when she dreams of a magical world with a faerie prince, Finn. Until she falls through a tree hollow, and discovers that the world of her dreams is real.

Leaving her world and the Civil War that is ravaging it behind, she enters the world of Velarium, only to find it is also at war against the evil kingdom of Infernios. As she tries to discover a way back home, Evelina also learns that she has magical powers, and finds her heart being torn in two different directions.

When it is revealed that she is the key to winning the war, Lina struggles as what she thought she knew begins to unravel, and she is forced to decide where, and who, is truly her home.
